Our facility houses a full line of toroid winding stations, along with in-line process controls, advanced testing and a range of secondary and assembly operations as needed for your solution. We feature both individual and full stack coil inductance and coil Q (Quality Factor) testing to confirming each part we produce meets your specification requirements.

Common Toroidal Coil Applications

We produce a wide variety of toroid coils, from specialized single-unit solutions to large volume orders. Because toroidal coils typically provide a compact design with high magnetic efficiency, low EMI (electromagnetic interference) and minimal noise, they are often used applications with strict performance control requirements and high sensitivity.

Toroidal coils offer a closed-loop core geometry that provides efficient magnetic coupling while reducing unwanted interference and signal loss. Compared to other coil configurations, toroid coils offer:

  • Reduced magnetic flux leakage
  • Improved efficiency in compact designs
  • Lower noise and vibration
  • More uniform magnetic fields for stable performance

These characteristics make ferrite toroid coils well-suited for aerospace systems, power supplies and converters, audio equipment, telecommunications, medical and specialized installations. Contact us to discuss your custom coil winding needs and application.

FAQ: Toroid Coil Winding

What is toroid coil winding?

Toroid coil winding is the process of wrapping wire around an iron core – either a ceramic iron compound like ferrite, or a powdered iron - to create an electromagnetic coil that is characterized by a circular or doughnut-shape.

How do toroid coils work?

When electricity flows through the coil’s wire it generates a magnetic field which stays within the coil’s core. The coil stores the energy, and can limit how quickly a current changes, helping improve efficiency, reduce energy loss and minimize electromagnetic interference.

Why would a design use toroid coils versus another electric coil type?

Depending on their design, toroidal coils are often selected because they:

  • Contain magnetic fields, reducing EMI (electromagnetic interference)
  • Provide higher efficiency, allowing designs to use a smaller coil to produce the same impact
  • Control electrical current for more consistency
  • Are compact, delivering higher inductance in a smaller package versus other electric coil types
  • Operate quietly limiting impact to surrounding elements

Why are ferrite cores better in toroid coils?

Ferrite cores are preferred for toroidal coils because their low electrical conductivity and high magnetic permeability minimize energy loss and electromagnetic interference, especially at high frequencies. Compared to powdered iron or iron cores, ferrites provide efficient inductance with less heat generation and better noise suppression. Our ferrite core suppliers are recognized across the industry for quality, ensuring our toroid coils perform reliably and over long life cycles.

Can Quality Coils produce custom toroid coil designs?

Yes. Quality Coils manufactures custom toroid coils based on wire gauge, core material, electrical requirements, and application-specific performance criteria.

How are toroid coils tested for quality?

While toroid coil testing should be developed based on the operating condition and application requirements, typical testing includes measurement of inductance, DC resistance (DCR), efficiency testing, current saturation testing, EMI testing, and insulation testing – often at different cycle temperatures and humidities. The Q factor (quality factor) of a toroidal coil is determined separately from these qualification tests and is calculated from the ratio of inductive reactance to AC loss resistance at a specified frequency. Environmental and operating-condition testing may be used to evaluate how Q varies with frequency, temperature, and load.
