Self supported coils come in handy when your application has limited space and can’t accommodate a bobbin. It is also useful in getting the Electromagnetic Coil Winding as close as possible to the metal in your circuit thereby giving you greater magnetic capabilities.
This type of coil would be wound on a mandrel and would be wound using a bond-able magnet wire. The bonding of the magnet wire can be accomplished by heat in an oven or through induction as well as by using various solvents.
